A geocacher hides a treasure chest in an interesting location, the cache to contain some items for swapping and a log book, and publishes the GPS coordinates on the internet. Using these coordinates, anyone can then hunt for the cache, swap an item inside it, enter their name in the logbook and therefore become a fully-fledged geocacher.
Those are the ground rules. Of course there is much more behind them. For example, there are all sorts of caches, from the simple cache, which one can in practice almost reach by car, via caches, which are only reachable using special equipment (e.g. with mountaineering or snorkelling kit) to trick caches, which require ingenuity on-the-spot or even research in advance.
But there is always a common thread: The fun associated with Geocaching. Fun being on the move, being in the open air. Fun searching and working things out. Fun being challenged, and exchanging items with other geocachers and also comments - via the logbook entries.
