Heritage Museum – Schruns

The Montafoner Talschaftsmuseum on the Kirchplatz in Schruns
is housed in a historic building, which, according to the latest
discoveries, already existed in the 16th century, being constantly
extended over time. The network of rooms is now full of nooks
and crannies, providing an even more fascinating visit for guests.
Special Montafon “icons” are illustrated, like the Montafon table,
traditional costume and the Valley’s migrant workers, as are
current themes, which are integrated into special exhibitions
(Over the winter 2009/10 Philipp Schönborn, artist, and Adele
Maklott, photographer in Schruns around 1920).

Opening times:
7 January – 10 April 2010, Tue - Sat, 15.00 – 18.00 hrs
Whitsun - 31 October 2010, Tue - Sat, 10.00 am - 06.00 pm

Old curate’s house – Bartholomäberg

The Altes Frühmesshaus by its name recalls the formerly
important curates, whose job was not just to read early Mass,
and since 2009 it has been the fourth museum in Montafon and
the 50th in Vorarlberg. It stands at certainly the most important location for providing the cultural history of the Province. Here, in the cradle of Montafon and also of Vorarlberg, the history of the settlement of the region began thousands of years ago – here is the place to look for the origin of Montafon and its very name, and here the interested visitor has the best overview. The museum is evolving slowly, increasing in status year on year, and all visitors have the opportunity to play an active part in this.

Opening times:
7 January – 10 April 2010, Tue - Fri, 16.00 – 18.00 hrs
Whitsun - 31 October 2010, Tue - Sat, 03.00 pm - 06.00 pm

Museum of Tourism – Gaschurn

The Gaschurn Museum is also housed in a – long empty
– curate’s house, which is considered one of the most attractive
historic houses in the Valley. For 17 years it illustrated the
history of tourism, but since 2009 the house has undergone a
transformation. In future, the alpine aspect will play a decisive
role. Gaschurn, as the well-known curate and occupant of the
house, the alpine pioneer and musician Franz Josef Battlogg
(1836 –1900) once said, can be portrayed as the gateway to
the mountains. The Museum will take this aspect into account
in years to come. Battlogg, a fascinating person, is the subject
of the first exhibition in the transformed museum, which can be
visited over the winter 2009/10.

Opening times:
7 January – 10 April 2010, Tue - Fri, 16.00 – 18.00 hrs
Whitsun - 31 October 2010, Tue - Sat, 03.00 pm - 06.00 pm

Museum of Mining – Silbertal

Montafon is the only region in Vorarlberg which can look back on
a great tradition of mining. As recent researches show, mining
is thought to have played a part in the settlement of the sunny
slopes of Bartholomäberg 3,500 years ago. In the Middle Ages
it was above all well-known families from Schwaz in the Tyrol,
one of the largest mining centres in Europe, who spread their
tentacles into Montafon. The name “Silbertal” (“Silver Valley”)
is also evidence of the rich mining past, as are the late-medieval
church of St. Agatha on the
Kristberg, the reconstructed galleries on the Bartholomäberg
and the surface pits on the Kristbergsattel. The Museum brings
together the most important historical events, and exhibits jewels
from Montafon’s mining past.

Opening times:
7 January – 10 April 2010, Wed - Fri, 16.00 – 18.00 hrs
Whitsun - 31 October 2010, Tue - Sat, 03.00 pm - 06.00 pm

Vermunt Water Mining Tunnel

New from summer 2007: "Gustav", the speaking locomotive and tunnel blasting simulator The Wasser-Erlebnisstollen Vermunt water mining tunnel leads from a gateway in Trominier through the mountain to the dam wall of Vermunt reservoir.

You can reach the starting point by taking the Vermuntbahn Partenen cableway. The cable car takes you up to the Bergstation Trominier mountain station, at approx. 1,700 m. There, you will find the entrance to the 1.5 km long water tunnel with its fascinating and unusual rock formations.

The exhibition, which you walk round inside the mountain and was initially open from July to the end of September 2007, is an account of interesting aspects of the former Trominier transport tunnel and power station construction, and the use of water power in the high mountains. The Wasser-Erlebnisstollen is a living exhibition hall which appeals to all ages and target groups. Contact: Vermuntbahn Partenen, Tel. +43 (0)5556 701-85231, tourismus@illwerke.at .
