The opportunities for a physical workout are almost inexhaustible, and are not just restricted to sport in the narrower sense. Apart from sports grounds, hiking trails, etc., Europatreppe (4,ooo steps) in Partenen offers the ultimate fitness kick.
What was built as a supply route for the construction of the great reservoirs in the Silvretta is today “probably the largest piece of fitness equipment in the world” It has 4,000 steps (For comparison: Ulm Cathedral has 768 steps), 700 m height difference and a maximum gradient of up to 86%, and is a challenge for professional and amateur sportsmen and women alike. Besides the Austrian Ladies National Ski Team, numerous football teams and marathon runners also integrate Europatreppe 4000 into their training schedule.
In order to establish one’s personal best time, time clocks have been installed at the start and finish. When accepting the challenge, we recommend a pulse rate monitor, which can be borrowed from the Gaschurn & Partenen Tourist Office. Should you be out of breath when climbing the steps: benches beside the route invite you to take a rest, and admire the magnificent view of the Gaschurn and Partenen landscape.
The steps of the Europatreppe can be purchased or presented by the Municipality of Gaschurn-Partenen to mark special occasions. A small brass plaque at the foot of Europatreppe records the respective owner of each step. The proceeds from the sale of the steps are devoted to the upkeep of Europatreppe 4000.
A sporting highlight is the Treppencup “Steps Cup” on 24./25 July 10, at which last year’s time to beat is 20 minutes, 28 seconds.
