Montafon Sura Kees curd cheese is a regional speciality that has been a hallmark of the Valley for hundreds of years. The inhabitants of Montafon have been making Sura Kees since the 12th century, and they can thus point to one of the oldest traditions of cheese-making in the Alps.
Efforts have been made for some years to establish Montafon Sura Kees as a regional speciality on the domestic market. Annual Sura Kees awards also have the aim of giving the product and the producers the chance to show off their efforts and successes with the Montafon cheese.
Sura Kees is a low-fat cheese with a small fat and cholesterol content. The ripe cheese has a mildly aromatic flavour, which with increasing age becomes slightly piquant to mildly sharp. Whether in its traditional form or even if refined, it belongs in a gourmet's kitchen.
