“You experience moments on the Bielerhöhe that you can’t have in the valley” says the experienced hiking guide Imelda Dönz in describing the fascination of this route. Crystal-clear mountain air, the fresh snow crunching under the snowshoes and, most of all, the breath-taking panoramic view of the 3,000 metre peaks of the Silvretta mountains. And the best thing is: it’s accessible to (nearly) everyone. “A good basic condition is sufficient in most cases”, Imelda says concerning the 225 vertical metres that must be overcome to reach the highest point of the tour.

As the famous Silvretta-Hochalpenstrasse is only open in the warm months, winter athletes conduct the first stage of the tour in the Vermuntbahn. Two small buses await at the summit station to lead the passengers through a narrow tunnel system that is several kilometres long. The walls of the tunnel hewn into the rock seem to almost touch the bus.

After a good ten minutes, the tunnel bus adventure is “overcome” and the snowshoe hike can begin after a brief introduction. Step by step, the winter athletes hike along the idyllic alpine winter landscape. After about 3 hours of walking time, the Bielerhöhe at 2,307 metres is reached - a place from which the legendary author Ernest Hemingway startet out on many ski tours in the 1920s. Today, the border area between Vorarlberg and Tyrol impresses with an extraordinary mixture of nature and technology that facilitated the emergence of the use of hydropower in the past decades.

Be sure to enjoy a cosy break at the tour destination. Pastry lovers should be certain not to miss out on the outstanding Kaiserschmarren (sugar raisin pancakes) in Silvrettahaus or Berggasthof Piz Buin. After the culinary delights, the outstanding view of the winterly Silvretta Reservoir will lure you to the sun terrace. The perfect end to a unique tour.
