Gerline Manz-Christ is a hiking guide – and “nature diplomat”. What does that mean? “I provide facts about the particularities of special habitats in an exciting and playful way. While doing so, I point out opportunities for people to regain strength and restore their equanimity for everyday life in nature.”
After several years in the diplomatic service, she also implements this approach on a tour to the “Natura 2000” area above the town of Partenen. The Wiegensee, which lies at around 1,900 metres above sea level, was dammed by plants, not by humans. That makes it the oldest reservoir in the Montafon – and an untouched moorland landscape that has an almost mystical effect, especially when the sun doesn’t shine.

Variety guaranteed

About the tour: The hikers will be assisted by the Tafamuntbahn for the longest part of the ascent. From the summit station, the route leads uphill all the way to the Wiegensee. The tour continues over gently rolling terrain to Alpe Verbella – a perfect place, not only because of the beautiful panorama, to take a break and have a snack: the Montafon Sura Kees, for example, is really delicious. After climbing along a steep path through alpine grass and quaint mountain forests, the participants reach Ganifer and finally Partenen. On this path, you can once again enjoy the view of the impressive artificial reservoir of Kops with its curved dam wall. “The descent of 1,000 vertical metres requires some stamina,” says Gerlinde, “but you’ll be more than rewarded by the very diverse landscape.”
