Tourism and the energy sector are the main industries.

The Montafon Tourism Office unites the tourism activities of the Montafon tourist locations as well as the cableways in the entire valley under one roof. It is also responsible for the coordinated positioning of the Montafon brand at home and abroad as well as the long-term development of the well-known holiday destination. The numerous activities, services and events organised by the Montafon Tourism Office are intended both for guests and locals. The Montafon Tourism Office is majority owned by the Montafon communities, as are the valley's cableways and the community association Stand Montafon. In addition, the headquarters of the Montafon Tourism Office are located in the Standesgebäude in Schruns.

Energy industry
Hydropower is one of the most important economic sectors in the Montafon. In addition to the tourism businesses, Illwerke VKW AG, which belongs to the state of Vorarlberg, has been an important employer in the Montafon for almost 100 years. They operate most of the power plants in the Montafon and provide peak-load electricity via pumped-storage power plants for sale to Germany. During off-peak periods, the significantly cheaper electricity from base-load power plants such as coal or nuclear energy is repurchased and used to pump the water back into the upper reservoirs, thus storing the energy.

Height above sea level 550 to 3,312 m (Piz Buin 3,312 m)
Area 561.85 km (as at 2011)
Length 39 km

From the Bielerhöhe to Bludenz, the high alpine valley stretches over 39 km with 13 villages and is the region with the most tourism in Vorarlberg plus centuries of tradition. The mountains of the Verwall group in the north and the Rätikon and Silvretta in the south offer the best leisure opportunities. One of them is the Piz Buin (3,312 m), the highest mountain in Vorarlberg.

Vorarlberg export region
Located on the western edge of Austria and half way down the country, Vorarlberg is bordered by Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. A small state that, with an above-average export rate, is one of the economically strongest regions in the world.

Sustainability is a priority in Vorarlberg.
Vorarlberg companies are pioneers of environmentally conscious business. Nature is considered an invaluable jewel and is being sensitively opened up for tourism. Industry, commerce and trade attach great importance to energy efficiency and resource conservation. They all make a valuable contribution to sustainably strengthening the Vorarlberg economic region.

Top-quality living environment and public space
The living environment and public space in Vorarlberg is top-notch in quality and rich in diversity. Numerous recreational facilities are available all year round and are a reflection of the enormously high quality of life. This includes high-ranking cultural events such as the Bregenz Festival or the Schubertiade, as well as numerous sports activities. For golfers, there are four 18-hole and three 9-hole golf courses.

“Off into the cool water or up high to new perspectives”
Vorarlberg is a country that you can cross by car in 1.5 hours – from the shores of Lake Constance in the north to the high mountains of the Silvretta in the south.

The target group of the Montafon

People's values and attitudes to life have changed in recent years.

The main target group for the Montafon are the established post-materialists, who are characterised by a culturally liberal basic and cosmopolitanism attitude as well as high aspirations in terms of individuality and self-realisation. Post-materialists are ecologically responsible, socially engaged and critical of consumption. They are pleasure-loving and interested in art and culture. They also take an active part in social life.

Time sovereignty, holistic recreation, striving for balance and the search for extraordinary holiday experiences with authentic encounters characterise their holiday orientation.

These 35- to 55-year-old couples or friends live in the city, are successful in their careers but stressed out, and are therefore mainly looking to wind down when on holiday. They want to engage in self-fulfilment. They love everything authentic and natural, want to discover new things away from mass tourism and therefore study the destination intensively in advance.

“Currently, there are still 14 glaciers in Vorarlberg, 12 of which are located in the Silvretta.”

One of the most well-known glaciers in Vorarlberg is the “Ochsentalergletscher”. It is located at the foot of the Piz Buin (in German: Ochsenspitze), Vorarlberg’s highest mountain. In some places, the ice of the Ochsentaler glacier is still up to 150 metres thick. It covers about 1.5 football fields. A glacier hike with a mountain guide is offered via BergePLUS.
