By hosting the 2027 FIS Snowboard, Freestyle, and Freeski World Championships—the largest winter sports event in Vorarlberg’s history—the Montafon is setting another significant milestone and consistently building on its success story as an innovative winter sports region.
Where Snow Makes History
Winter sports in the Montafon are more than just a tradition. They are a way of life that connects generations. Shaped by a cautious spirit of optimism in the 1920s—a time when Ernest Hemingway also discovered the Montafon and immortalized it in his writing—the region’s development into a renowned winter sports destination really took off in the 1950s. Ski areas were expanded, accommodations were built, and ski schools were opened. Legendary World Cup races made the valley famous far beyond Vorarlberg. To this day, this development is driven by people with a pioneering spirit, down-to-earth attitudes, and a genuine passion for snow. They have made the Montafon what it is today: a winter sports region with international appeal, deeply rooted in its history and ready to write new chapters.
Montafon
The Montafon is a 39-kilometer-long valley in the south of the Austrian state of Vorarlberg. Nestled between the imposing peaks of the Rätikon, Silvretta, and Verwall ranges, this region combines a centuries-old cultural landscape with vibrant village life and warm hospitality. As Vorarlberg’s most popular tourist region in terms of overnight stays, the Montafon offers approximately 20,000 guest beds spread across eleven authentic tourist villages. Winter sports enthusiasts will find ideal conditions for winter activities in five ski areas at elevations ranging from 650 to 2,400 meters, where snow is guaranteed. As a year-round destination, the valley offers unique opportunities for mountain sports experiences in every season.

Vorarlberg
Vorarlberg is one of Austria’s smallest states in terms of area, yet it offers an enormous variety of landscapes and cultures within a very small space. Shaped by Alemannic influences from its neighbors—Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and (southern) Germany—Vorarlberg preserves numerous traditional customs, such as the spring bonfires or the autumn cattle drives.
