A walk along the Montafon Steinschafweg
a breed of Montafon sheep threatened with extinction
On this varied circular walk, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the history and distinctive characteristics of the Montafon stone sheep – a regional breed that was once threatened with extinction. From the centre of St. Gallenkirch, the trail leads you gently uphill through woods to beautiful vantage points above the village and on through a diverse cultural landscape. You’re almost guaranteed to spot some Steinschaf sheep along the way. To round off the walk, you can visit the Mathies Steinschaf farm in St. Gallenkirch and gain a deeper insight into the breed.
