Tour description

A high-alpine traverse from the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe, past the Wiesbadener Hütte and the Vermunt Pass, to Chamonna Tuoi, and through the Val Tuoi to the Engadine mountain village of Guarda.

From the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe, the trail takes you along Lake Silvretta through the Ochsental valley to the Wiesbadener Hut and then across challenging alpine terrain over the Vermunt Pass to the Swiss side, ending at Chamonna Tuoi. From the hut, the terrain becomes much gentler, and you’ll hike through the Val Tuoi, past the Alp Suot and along the Clozza, down to Guarda. The traverse between the Wiesbadener Hut and Chamonna Tuoi is a challenging alpine undertaking and not your typical mountain hike.

Getting to the Starting Point

The Silvretta High Alpine Road is expected to remain closed until summer 2030. Therefore, in the summer, you cannot reachthe Bielerhöhe from the Montafon by car or public transportation via the High Alpine Road; instead, you must take the Vermuntbahn from Partenen and then transfer to the tunnel bus.

You can find more information here.

By Public Transportation

With the Landbus Montafon and the Montafonerbahn, you can travel comfortably and flexibly throughout the valley. The train and bus connect the towns regularly, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find suitable connections in the cleVVVer mobil schedule app. The nearest stop is “Partenen Bergbahnen Talstation.” From there, you can reach the Vermuntbahn valley station in just a few minutes on foot.

By car

By car, drive to Partenen to the valley stations of the Vermuntbahn or Tafamuntbahn. The two valley stations are just a few minutes’ walk apart. Parking is available near the valley stations. Since parking conditions may change due to construction work, please follow the current on-site signage and check in advance for available parking spaces.

PLEASE NOTE: Since the tour ends in Guarda, you should arrange your onward or return travel before the tour begins.

Important Information

This tour is suitable only for very experienced mountaineers. The Swiss Alpine Club currently rates the route from Bielerhöhe via the Wiesbadener Hut to Chamonna Tuoi as T4+.

In the area between the Wiesbadener Hut, the Vermunt Pass, and Chamonna Tuoi, you will be navigating high-alpine terrain. The trail and conditions can change due to glacial retreat, snowfields, rockfalls, and other alpine processes. The tour should therefore only be undertaken with appropriate alpine experience, suitable equipment, and ideally with a state-certified mountain guide. Check for current conditions immediately before setting out.

Tips

Due to its length and the challenges of alpine terrain, this tour is best suited as a two-day trip with an overnight stay at a mountain hut. You should reserve sleeping accommodations well in advance directly with the Wiesbadener Hütte or the Chamonna Tuoi, as these huts can be in high demand during the summer season. The Chamonna Tuoi offers online reservations.

The contrast is what gives this traverse its special character: The rugged, high-alpine Silvretta range around the Vermunt Pass gives way to the Val Tuoi, an increasingly green mountain valley that eventually leads you all the way to Guarda.
