Tour description

The Gypsum Trail takes you on a journey through the history of gypsum mining in St. Anton im Montafon, leading from the village up to the former gypsum mine and back down through the shady forest into the valley.

The gypsum quarry below the Davennastock still serves as a reminder of St. Anton im Montafon’s long history of mining. Gypsum was mined here for centuries before mining operations ended in 1977 and the area was restored to its natural state. Some traces of this era are still visible in the landscape today.

Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the scale of the former gypsum mining operations and can discover, among other things, the two supports of the old material cableway. The shaded forest sections and the Tränenbächle stream provide a pleasant change of pace.

The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon. Four exploration areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—illustrate how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are interconnected.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails continually offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

Starting Point
St. Anton im Montafon, hiking parking lot

Directions
From the hiking parking lot, the trail leads you along the Mühlibach stream on the former access road, quietly and leisurely toward Gipsbruch. In the Prazalanz area, you’ll switch to the forest road and hike back down into the valley.

A shaded forest trail then leads you back toward the starting point. On the way back, you’ll once again get a good view of the scale of the former gypsum mining operation and can spot the two supports of the old material cable car.

Getting to the Starting Point
The starting point for the tour is the hiking parking lot in St. Anton im Montafon

By public transportation:
The Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn railway offer a convenient and flexible way to get around the valley. Trains and buses run regularly between the towns, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find the right connection HERE. Bus stop at the start/end of this tour: St. Anton im Montafon Town Hall / St. Anton im Montafon Train Station

By car:
Take the A14 to the Bludenz/Montafon exit, then follow the Montafoner Straße L188 to St. Anton im Montafon. There you’ll reach the St. Anton im Montafon hiking parking lot.

For the hike, we recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing.

At the Tränenbächle, you can cool your tired hiking feet in the refreshing water.
