Hiking on the smugglers' path in Gargellen

In the very places where smugglers and pack-horse drivers once roamed, there are still easily accessible paths today, steeped in history. On a varied circular walk, the Smugglers’ Trail takes you uphill over the St. Antönier Pass (2,379 m), then slightly downhill past Lake Gafier (2,290 m) and up a final climb to the Gafier Pass (2,415 m), before heading downhill to the mountain station. There is plenty to discover in the border region between Austria and Switzerland – with a bit of luck, you might even spot shy Alpine animals such as ibex, chamois or marmots.

Meeting point: 9:00 a.m. at the ticket hall of the Gargellen mountain railway valley station

Route: Gargellen mountain railway mountain station – St. Anönier Joch – Gafiersee – Gafierjoch – Speichersee – Gargellen mountain railway mountain station

Duration: approx. 5.5 hours (pure walking time: approx. 5 hours)

Ascent and descent: approx. 600 metres

Refreshment stop: Schafberg Hüsli (Gargellen mountain station)

Getting there: Why not leave your car behind? Our tours are timed to coincide with the bus timetable. You can reach the meeting point by public transport via the Bergbahnen Gargellen bus stop (vmobil.at). If you’re travelling in your own car, free parking is available at the Bergbahnen Gargellen car park.

Equipment:

• Bring a backpack with food and drinks as well as rain and sun protection
• Hiking boots with treaded soles are required.

• The tours can take place in any weather, short-term route changes are possible (depending on the weather)
• Dogs are not allowed on this tour
• The hike is not possible with prams or handcarts
