Klosterkirche Gauenstein

Even in the early days of this monastery, the Capuchins took up spades, pickaxes, and shovels and built a road suitable for vehicles. Until 1840, in fact, only a rarely used path led up to the summit of Kalvarienberg (as the hill above Schruns was formerly called). Before the Capuchins arrived, hermits inhabited this remote spot. Later (during the Josephine era in 1789), it was used for secular purposes.
In 1844, the monastery was built with funds and through the special efforts of Mr. Johann Tschol of Schruns, and our brothers took up residence there. The old chapel was almost entirely demolished and replaced by a new one.
