Litzkapelle

Church | Chapel
Außerlitzstr., 6780 Schruns

The Litz Chapel stands at the intersection of Außerlitzstraße and Montjola. It was built in 1688 during a period of Baroque popular piety and reflects the flourishing local pilgrimage tradition. Legend links the chapel’s origins to the iconoclasm that took place during the Graubünden religious wars of the first half of the 17th century. The miraculous image is said to have been moved to the Montafon region for safekeeping during that time. In addition to the miraculous image, the chapel is particularly notable today for the sculptural works of Melchior Lechleitner, a native of Tyrol who created the most significant sculptural works in the Bludenz and Montafon regions in the late 17th century.
