Tour description

The Talweg trail showcases another aspect of valley life—electricity generation—and runs along the Ill River from St. Gallenkirch through the predominantly agricultural villages all the way to Partenen.

The valley is shaped by two rivers: the Ill and the Suggadin. Like lifelines, they flow through a landscape of villages, scattered settlements, and farmland, where a diverse culture has developed over the centuries.

Today, power generation is a major economic factor in the region and has a particularly strong influence on the upper valley. At the same time, the cultural diversity of the Montafon is reflected, among other things, in the Montafon dialect, which is listed as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

What is the Montafon Alpine Mosaic?

The Alpenmosaik Montafon brings the region’s scenic diversity to life. The four exploration areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—offer different perspectives on nature, the landscape, and culture.

You can find more information about the Montafon Alpine Mosaic HERE.

Directions
From the Valisera Bahn valley station in St. Gallenkirch, follow the Illweg trail down the valley toward Partenen. Along the way, you’ll pass two swimming pools and hike along varied forest and meadow trails. The Maria Schnee Chapel is also located along the route.

Then cross to the other side of the Ill River and the road, and follow the path straight ahead toward Obertrantrauas and Außerbofa. Continuing along the Illweg, you’ll reach Partenen. Passing the Vermunt power plant and the valley station of the Vermuntbahn, you’ll reach a bridge. There, you’ll cross to the other side of the road and the stream again and follow the sidewalk about 150 meters up the valley.

Then turn left toward the church and Partenen’s town center, where you’ll reach the tour’s destination.

End Point
Partenen, town center
