Tour description

The Montafonerhausweg trail shows you the distinctive features of traditional residential and farm buildings and their close connection to the Montafon cultural landscape.

What makes a Montafon house unique? Along this trail, you’ll learn more at five stops about the typical features of residential and farm buildings constructed in the Montafon from the 15th to the 20th century. This will help you recognize these characteristic elements in other houses throughout the region.

Many of these buildings are of great architectural and local historical value and are meticulously maintained by their owners. The trail thus not only highlights the architecture but also reveals a piece of history and the development of the Montafon cultural landscape.

The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon. Four experiential areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—illustrate how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are interconnected.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails constantly offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

Starting point
St. Gallenkirch, Gortipohl Center

Directions
From the St. Nicholas Parish Church in Gortipohl, the trail leads you into the valley and past the middle school to the main road. There, turn left and walk along the road. After about 200 meters, turn left onto the meadow path and follow the signs toward Außergant.

After crossing the second stream, the trail leads you downhill parallel to the stream to the Plague Chapel. From there, hike back toward Gortipohl and return to the starting point.

Getting to the Starting Point
The starting point for the tour is downtown Gortipohl.

By public transportation:
The Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn railway offer a convenient and flexible way to get around the valley. Trains and buses run regularly between the towns, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find the right connection HERE. Bus stop at the start/end of this tour: Gortipohl Center

By car:
Take the A14 to the Bludenz/Montafon exit, then follow the Montafoner Straße L188 to Gortipohl. We recommend using public transportation for this tour.

For the hike, we recommend wearing weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes with good traction. An "Active Hiking Map" can help you find your way.
