Tour description

A scenic mountain bike tour from Silvretta Park Montafon up to the rustic Außergweilalpe. The route starts on asphalt, then continues along a gravel farm road, climbing at a steady gradient through the forest. Along the way, beautiful views of St. Gallenkirch open up time and again. The return trip follows the same route.

The tour starts at Silvretta Park Montafon at the Valisera Bahn valley station. Follow the main road toward Gargellen and take the Eggaweg to reach a farm road that transitions from asphalt to gravel after about one kilometer. The route winds uphill through the forest in a series of switchbacks, passing a few scattered mountain settlements. Beautiful views of St. Gallenkirch open up time and again. Starting at the Gweilmaisäß, a steeper climb awaits before you reach the rustic Außergweilalpe below the Gweilspitze.

Please note: The route may only be used from June 15 through September 15 between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Since there are no places to stop for refreshments, you should bring plenty of food and drinks with you. The return trip follows the same route. The route is also well-suited for a bike-and-hike tour. From the Alpe, you can hike to destinations such as the Innergweilalpe, the Horaalpe, the Gweilspitze, or the Alpilakopf.

Getting to the Starting Point

We recommend the Silvretta Park Montafon in St. Gallenkirch, near the Valisera Bahn valley station, as the starting point.

By public transportation

The Landbus Montafon and the Montafonerbahn offer a convenient and flexible way to get around the valley. Trains and buses run regularly between the towns, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find the right connection here. Bus stop at the tour’s starting and ending point: St. Gallenkirch Valisera Bahn

Please note that transporting bicycles—and especially e-bikes—on public transportation is subject to restrictions. Therefore, be sure to check the applicable terms of carriage and available capacity in advance.

By Car

Take the A14 to the Bludenz/Montafon exit and continue on the Montafonerstraße L188 to St. Gallenkirch-Galgenul. There are plenty of parking spaces available at Silvretta Park Montafon.

Important Information

The trail may only be used from June 15 through September 15 between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

The trail leading to the Mott Plateau below the Gweilspitze and to the Innergweilalpe is reserved for hikers. Please ride your mountain bike only as far as the Außergweilalpe and continue on foot from there.

There are no places to stop for refreshments along the route or at the Alpe. Therefore, be sure to bring plenty of drinks and food with you.

Be mindful of hikers, grazing animals, and farm vehicles. Ride with foresight and adjust your speed to the trail conditions.

Tips

This tour is ideal for a bike-and-hike adventure. From the Außergweilalpe, you can reach the Innergweilalpe on foot in about 45 minutes and the Horaalpe in about 30 minutes.

The Gweilspitze at 2,187 meters and the Alpilakopf at 2,255 meters are also great options for further hiking destinations.

From the plateau (Mott) located below the Gweilspitze, you’ll enjoy a fantastic panoramic view all the way to the 3,000-meter peaks of the Silvretta.

Since there are no places to stop for refreshments, you should bring plenty of drinks and food. A good level of basic fitness is also recommended for the steeper sections.
