Tour description

A challenging loop hike from Latschau through the Gauertal Valley, past Lake Tobel, and along the Mittagspitz ridge to the 2,154-meter-high Tschaggunser Mittagspitze.

This long mountain hike takes you from the Gauertal valley, past Alpilaalpe and Tobelsee, higher and higher into the rocky world of the Rätikon. The short, challenging final ascent to the Tschaggunser Mittagspitze requires sure-footedness and a head for heights, but rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view of the valleys and peaks of the Montafon. The loop trail then leads back to Latschau via Hochegga and the Berggasthof Grabs.

Directions

From the Latschau hiking parking lot, the route first takes you past the reservoir into the Gauertal valley and on to Volspora. There, follow the trail marker uphill toward Alpilaalpe. The trail now climbs steeply and takes you past the highest hut on the Alpilaalpe and on to Tobelsee.
From Lake Tobel, continue hiking toward the Schwarzhorn Saddle. Just before the saddle, switch to the white-blue-white-marked Alpine Trail, which takes you up to the panoramic Mittagspitz Ridge at the foot of the rocky summit. From here, the view extends deep into the Gauertal valley and takes in the striking peaks of the Rätikon, such as the Drei Türme, Drusenfluh, Schwarzhorn, Weißplatte, and Geißspitze.
On the ridge, the short but challenging final ascent to the Tschaggunser Mittagspitze at 2,154 meters begins. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are absolutely essential here. At the summit, a sweeping panoramic view opens up over the valleys and mountain landscapes of the Montafon.
After a break at the summit, you’ll first descend along the same route back to the signpost below the summit. From there, head toward Hochegga and the Berggasthof Grabs.
At first, you’ll traverse the slopes of the Tschaggunser Mittagspitze with only a slight loss of elevation. The narrow mountain trail winds gently up and down through alpine vegetation, offering repeated views of the Rätikon, the Zimba, the slopes of Bartholomäberg, and the Hochjoch area.
Then a very steep descent begins, which once again requires your full concentration. At Hochegga, you’ll reach a forest road and hike down across the meadow slopes to the Berggasthof Grabs. From there, follow the signs back to Latschau.

Important Information

The Tschaggunser Mittagspitze is a challenging alpine hike. Excellent physical fitness, sure-footedness, and a head for heights are required.

The section starting at the Schwarzhornsattel requires special attention: The white-blue-white-marked Alpine Steig leads through rocky and, in places, exposed terrain. The short final ascent to the summit is also challenging.

The descent via Hochegga toward Grabs is very steep in places and requires a high level of concentration, especially after a long day on the mountain.

Check the current weather and trail conditions before setting out. In wet conditions, poor visibility, or the risk of thunderstorms, you should refrain from attempting the summit.

Sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, sun and rain protection, and sufficient drinks and food are essential gear.

Tips

Tobelsee: Plan a short break at the idyllically situated Tobelsee. Especially when the weather is calm, the striking mountain landscape of the Rätikon reveals a surprisingly serene side here.

Take your time at the summit: After the challenging final ascent, it’s worth taking a moment to let your gaze wander. The Gauertal, the Rätikon, and the mountain ranges across the valley are particularly impressive from this vantage point.

Stop for refreshments in Grabs: The Berggasthof Grabs is located right on the way back and is a great place to stop for a break after the steep descent. Check opening hours in advance.

Start early: With about seven hours of walking time and more than 1,100 meters of elevation gain, this tour is a full-fledged day in the mountains. Setting out early gives you a time buffer and allows for more breaks.
