Ernest Hemingway

The young man and the mountains

A celebration for life - 100 years of Ernest Hemingway in the Montafon

2025 - The Hemingway anniversary year

Exactly 100 years ago, Ernest Hemingway discovered the Montafon for himself - a region that deeply touched and inspired him. Embedded in the imposing Alpine landscape, he not only experienced a carefree lightness of being here, but also an attitude to life that shaped him for the rest of his life. "On Christmas Day in Schruns, the snow was so white that it hurt your eyes when you looked out of the wine tavern and saw people coming home from church," wrote Hemingway, capturing his impressions of the Montafon for eternity.

Today, it is not only his works that remind us of this time, but also the impressive bronze statue opposite the Posthotel Taube in Schruns - a symbol of his deep connection with our region.

Impressions from the anniversary

"Ernest Hemingway" exhibition at the tourist information office in Gaschurn

In 1924/25 and 1925/26, Ernest Hemingway, who was still unknown as a writer at the time, spent his winter vacations in the skiing paradise of the Montafon.

He always spent his vacation in Schruns, in the "Hotel Taube" with the Nels family and stayed here for several months. Together with his wife Hadley, his friend Dos Passos and of course Pauline, he went on a ski tour to the "Madlenerhaus". He has also stayed overnight in the cozy "Rössle" in Gaschurn with the Kessler family. You can find out more information at the tourist information office in Gaschurn.
