Tour description

Gargellner Schafberg Trail "Johann" - Time for hiking

Greetings! I am Johann.

I used to live in the Gargellental valley as a mountain guide, shepherd, farmer and - when the need arose - poacher. In this untouched mountain world I felt wild and free - and at the same time safe.

Back then, people still saw themselves as part of a larger whole and were closely connected with nature, with its gentleness and at the same time with its elemental force. It was a simple, archaic existence. If you learned to live in harmony with the mountains, they gave you food and refuge.

My life as a mountain man is rich in stories. I would like to tell you many of them - of frugality and of amazement at the small wonders of life. Come with me, I'll show you what it was like back then. Together we will hike over the Schafberg and descend along a narrow path to the emerald-green Lake Ganda. If you follow the signposts with the name "JOHANN", you will discover my favorite places that gave me strength over a century ago.

Here you can find the current overview map of the Gargellner Schafberg trails.

Directions

This easy hike starts at the Schafberg Hüsli mountain restaurant (2,130 m) and leads to Lake Ganda.

Tour route:

Take the cable car from Gargellen (1,423 m) to the mountain station and the Schafberg Hüsli mountain restaurant in around 8 minutes. At the starting point of the tour, follow the signs to "JOHANN". After approx. 35 minutes you will reach the emerald-green Gandasee lake (1,970 m) directly below the Madrisa.

The trail: A narrow path takes you 270 meters downhill to the crystal-clear Lake Ganda - sure-footedness and sturdy footwear recommended. There, the brave can jump into the cool water, while leisure hikers can rest on the charming shore.
