Tour description

The Mountaineering Trail takes you on a journey through Gaschurn and its history, following in the footsteps of famous visitors, local mountaineers, and visionary figures.

Mountaineering has had a lasting impact on Gaschurn and the Montafon region. Along the trail, you’ll encounter places and figures connected to the development of mountaineering and tourism in the region. You’ll gain insights into the history of the area and its significance for mountaineering.

In addition to historic buildings and special sites, the loop also offers beautiful views of Gaschurn and the surrounding mountains. At the end of the tour, two special landmarks of local history await you: the Alpine and Tourism Museum in the former Frühmesshaus and the last remaining dance pavilion in the Montafon.

What is the Montafon Alpine Mosaic?

The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon. Four exploration areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—highlight how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are interconnected.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails continually offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

So: Choose an exploration area, lace up your hiking boots, and discover the diversity of the Montafon step by step.

You can find more information about the Montafon Alpine Mosaic HERE.

Directions
From the tourist information office in downtown Gaschurn, start by hiking out of the valley and, at the intersection, turn slightly right uphill toward Außerbach. Passing the approximately 400-year-old Lucas-Tschofen House, the trail takes you across the road and along a hiking path to the Valschavielbach stream. The trail continues to Obere Gosta and then back into the valley toward the town center.

Continue following the trail toward Rifa and hike above Gaschurn to Richardsruhe. There, you’ll be treated to a beautiful view of the village and the surrounding peaks. At the end of Rifastraße, cross the state highway and follow the road uphill toward Untertrantrauas.

Then you’ll switch back to the hiking trail toward Gaschurn. After crossing the state highway once more, you’ll cross the bridge to the Maria Schnee Chapel and continue back to the town center. Passing the Alpine and Tourism Museum in the former early-morning chapel and the Gaschurn parish church, you’ll reach the last remaining dance pavilion in the Montafon. From there, it’s just a few steps down the valley to the starting point.
