The Montafon Brown Cattle and the Steinschaf are two breeds of livestock found exclusively in this region. The Steinschaf was once threatened with extinction but has been bred again for some time now. Both species are very low-maintenance, hardy, and capable of navigating rough terrain, making them ideally suited for life on the alpine pastures. Aside from providing meat, wool, and milk, both the Brown Cattle and the Steinschaf play a special role in the Montafon cultural landscape: by grazing, they keep the land clear. Otherwise, the pastures would become overgrown with brush, and many beautiful views would simply be obscured.
