Pfarrkirche Gantschier

The parish church in Gantschier is dedicated to St. Joseph, the patron saint of Vorarlberg. The very choice of St. Joseph as Vorarlberg’s patron saint points to the church’s “youthful age,” as it was built between 1960 and 1964 according to plans by architect Werner Pfeifer. The rectangular building with a sloped roof and a simple single-nave interior, as well as the concrete-glass windows created by the artist Adolfo Winternitz (painter and stained-glass artist) and supplied by the company Vitraux in Lausanne are characteristic of church architecture in the 1960s, as also seen in the Montafon region in the new parish church in Vandans or the church in Latschau. The old altar, along with several figures, has recently been moved from the old Baroque chapel into the new church interior.
