Tour description

A challenging bike tour through the unspoiled Valschaviel Valley up to the Inner Rossberg, where tranquility, alpine vistas, and a breathtaking mountain panorama await you.

Starting from the valley floor, the tour takes you past waterfalls, mountain streams, and old Maissäss settlements deep into one of the most unspoiled side valleys in the Montafon. The long climb to the Valschaviel mountain pasture along the wide gravel path demands a fair amount of stamina, before the terrain temporarily flattens out toward Mardusa. Next, the challenging final ascent to the Inner Rossberg awaits you, from where you’ll cover the last 300 meters on foot to the unstaffed Rossberg Rinderhütte. Once you reach the top, one thing stands out above all else: plenty of mountain nature, plenty of peace and quiet, and a sweeping view of the surrounding landscape.

Starting Point

Silvretta Park Montafon, Valisera Bahn valley station in St. Gallenkirch

Directions

From Silvretta Park Montafon, start by cycling along the bike path into the valley toward Gaschurn until you reach Mountain Beach. There, turn left into the Valschaviel Valley and follow the wide gravel path uphill to the Valschavielmaisäß. Passing the fish pond and following the mountain streams, the route continues into the upper valley toward Mardusa and then over the Inner Rossberg to just before the Rossberg Rinderhütte. You’ll cover the last 300 meters or so to the hut on foot. The return trip follows the same route.

End Point

Silvretta Park Montafon, Valisera Bahn valley station in St. Gallenkirch

Important Information

The Rossberg Rinderhütte does not serve food or drinks. Therefore, be sure to bring enough food and drinks for the entire hike.

Mountain biking in the Verwall European Nature Reserve is permitted only between June 15 and October 15, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., on the marked trails.

The route across the Gaschurner Winterjöchle to the Neue Heilbronner Hütte is not recommended.

Useful tips

Take some time to explore the historic Maisäß landscape of Valschaviel. Its unique atmosphere even won over director Joseph Vilsmaier: parts of his film “Bergkristall” were shot here in 2004.

If you have enough time, are in good physical condition, and have the right gear, you can combine the tour with a hike to Lake Valschaviel or up to the Albonakopf at 2,482 meters.
