Tour description

A very long and exposed via ferrata along the imposing Fallbachwand. With over 1,000 meters of climbing, numerous sections rated up to C/D, and breathtaking views down into the depths, this route is a true challenge for experienced via ferrata climbers.

The Fallbach via ferrata leads upward to the right of the waterfall through steep slabs, edges, and wall sections. Technically, the difficulty is mostly rated C to C/D; however, the length and sustained exertion are the key challenges. To tackle the climb’s approximately 650 meters of elevation gain, you’ll need excellent stamina, strength, and experience. Impressive views of the valley floor and the Fallbach open up time and again.

Start - Directions - Descent

Access

From the via ferrata parking lot on the L97, walk about 100 meters down the valley. After crossing the road, go through the gate in the wildlife fence and follow the signs for “Zum Klettersteig.”

You’ll reach the starting point in about 20 minutes along the marked hiking trail.

Route Description

At the start, the route leads over steep and slabby sections with several challenging ascents rated C/D. This is followed by a longer section with stepped terrain, easier passages, and occasional grassy ledges. In the upper section, the via ferrata becomes significantly steeper again. Slabs, short overhangs, and a dark final wall demand your full concentration and strength once more. After the last challenging sections, the route leads over a band of mountain pine to the exit. You should plan on spending about three hours on the via ferrata.

Descent

From the exit, follow the blue dot markings through the forest and cross the Fallbach. You’ll then reach a blue-and-white-marked hiking trail. Follow this trail downhill toward Winkel and continue back to the starting point. You should allow about one hour for the descent.

Getting to the starting point

Getting to the Starting Point

We recommend the via ferrata parking lot in Daalas as the starting point for the via ferrata

By public transportation:

With the Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn, you can travel comfortably and flexibly throughout the valley. The train and bus connect the towns regularly, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find the right connection here. Bus stop at the start/end of this tour: Gasthaus Krone Dalaas

By car:

Take the A14 or S16 to the Dalaas exit, then drive briefly back toward Bludenz on State Road L97. After about 1.5 kilometers, you’ll reach the via ferrata parking lot right off the road.

Important Information

You climb the via ferrata at your own risk and on your own responsibility. Please check the weather, current conditions, snow conditions, and difficulty level in advance. Realistically assess your experience, surefootedness, ability to handle heights, and physical fitness.

A complete set of standard-compliant via ferrata equipment is absolutely essential. This includes a hip belt, via ferrata set, helmet, and gloves. Equally important is appropriate footwear: sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with good traction.

Your backpack should also include plenty of food, sun and rain protection, and a first-aid kit.

In the Montafon, you can rent high-quality via ferrata equipment at select sports shops. Please check in advance regarding availability, sizes, and reservation options.

Tips

Since the via ferrata includes several slippery rock sections, it is not recommended when wet. The via ferrata has no emergency exit.
