Tour description

A short via ferrata close to the valley, ideal for athletic beginners and anyone looking to get back into climbing at the start of the season. Numerous handholds make the steep sections easier to navigate and ensure that the approximately 80-meter-long route is easily accessible.

The Kellenegg via ferrata is located right on the outskirts of Brand and combines short steep sections, slabs, ramps, and slightly overhanging passages. The difficulty levels range mostly from B to B/C, with a few sections reaching C.

Between the steeper sections, there are frequent opportunities to catch your breath. However, sure-footedness, a head for heights, and confidence in using via ferrata equipment remain essential.

Start - Directions - Descent

Access

From the center of Brand, walk past the Brandnertal Climbing Park and then follow the Kellenegg hiking trail to the start of the via ferrata.

Route Description

At the start, the route leads over a short steep step and a ledge to a ramp. This is followed by a steep slab before you reach the first short overhang, rated C in difficulty.

Via another ramp, you’ll reach a steep step and finally the last slightly overhanging section. The final few meters are significantly easier, winding through wooded terrain to the exit.

Descent

From the end of the via ferrata, follow the trail briefly uphill. The Kellenegg hiking trail then leads you back to the center of Brand.

Getting to the starting point

The starting point is the community center in Brand
By public transportation:

With the Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn, you can get around the valley comfortably and flexibly. Trains and buses run regularly between the towns, every half hour or every hour depending on the route. You can find the right connection here. Bus stop at the start/end of this tour: Brand Community Center

By car:
Take the A14 to the Brandnertal exit and continue on the Montafoner Straße L82 to Brand. Parking is available at the Dorfbahn valley station.

Important Information

You climb the via ferrata at your own risk and on your own responsibility. Please check the weather, current conditions, snow conditions, and difficulty level in advance. Realistically assess your experience, surefootedness, ability to handle heights, and physical fitness.

A complete set of standard-compliant via ferrata equipment is absolutely essential. This includes a hip belt, via ferrata set, helmet, and gloves. Equally important is appropriate footwear: sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with good traction.

Your backpack should also include plenty of food, sun and rain protection, and a first-aid kit.

In the Montafon, you can rent high-quality via ferrata equipment at select sports shops. Please check in advance regarding availability, sizes, and reservation options.

Warning: Do not enter the gorge during thunderstorms, heavy rain, or high water levels. The via ferrata is intended for ascent only and must not be used for descent.
