Tour description

The Wasserfall via ferrata in St. Anton im Montafon is a scenic via ferrata located near the valley floor. It is easily accessible, but its steep and exposed sections mean it should not be underestimated.

Just above the village, the trail leads through the forest before you climb up a ladder right next to the roaring waterfall. After a flatter section along the edge, you’ll reach the slightly overhanging crux, rated C/D. Two rope bridges—which can also be bypassed—offer spectacular views of the plunging water.

Please note: The via ferrata is closed from December 1 to March 15.

Access - Directions - Descent

Access

The starting point is the climbing parking lot near the St. Anton im Montafon community center. From there, follow the “Klettersteig” sign or the hiking trail through the village to the waterfall. The start is located directly at the viewpoint by the waterfall on the right-hand side.

Route description

At the start, you climb parallel to the waterfall. The route then continues upward along the ridge. The difficulty increases as you go, so you should be confident in your experience, sure-footedness, and physical fitness. Please note: There is no emergency exit.

Descent

The descent is either directly back toward the starting point or via the Marentes-Jetzmunt hiking trail to the Vandans train station. From there, follow the path along the Ill River back to St. Anton im Montafon.

Important Information

You undertake the via ferrata at your own risk and responsibility. Please check the weather, current conditions, snow conditions, and difficulty level in advance. Realistically assess your experience, sure-footedness, ability to handle heights, and physical fitness.

Complete, standard-compliant via ferrata equipment is absolutely essential. This includes a hip belt, via ferrata set, helmet, and gloves. Equally important is appropriate footwear: sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with good traction.

Your backpack should also include sufficient food, sun and rain protection, and a first-aid kit.

In the Montafon, you can rent high-quality via ferrata equipment at select sports shops. Please check in advance regarding availability, sizes, and reservation options.

Please note: The via ferrata is closed from December 1 to March 15.
