Tour description

The Gauertaler AlpkulTour combines art, nature, and Alpine culture, taking you past 13 artistically designed stations through the impressive alpine pasture landscape of the Gauertal Valley.

Along the themed trail, you’ll encounter 13 installations by Montafon artist Roland Haas. These unusual objects explore themes related to alpine culture, three-tiered agriculture, mountaineering, natural hazards, and life in the Montafon. They invite you to view familiar ways of life and work from a new perspective.

QR codes and the “Muntafoner Originale” guide you through the individual stations and tell the story behind the installations. The landscape around the Gauertal valley—with its striking Three Towers, traditional alpine pastures, and cornfields—serves as the backdrop for this artistic exploration of the Montafon cultural landscape.

What is the Montafon Alpine Mosaic?

The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon. Four exploration areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—reveal how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are interconnected.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails will continually offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

So: Choose an exploration area, lace up your hiking boots, and discover the diversity of the Montafon step by step.

You can find more information about the Montafon Alpine Mosaic HERE.

Starting Point
Tschagguns, upper station of the Golmerbahn (Grüneck)

Directions
Take the Golmerbahn from Latschau to the Grüneck mountain station at 1,890 meters. From there, the trail leads briefly uphill and then gently up and down toward Latschätzalpe. This is a good spot for your first break. At the Sennalpe, in addition to butter and mountain cheese, the traditional Montafon Sura Kees is also produced. With a little luck, you might spot marmots in this area.

From the Latschätzalpe, the trail continues toward the Lindauer Hütte. The hut is located at the foot of the Drei Türme, the striking peaks of the Rätikon and a landmark of the Montafon. There is also an alpine botanical garden right next to the Lindauer Hütte. The descent then begins through the Gauertal valley via the Untere Spora and Latschätzalpe. About three-quarters of the way along the route, the Gauertalhaus offers another place to stop for a break before you reach the Golmerbahn in Latschau after about half an hour.

End Point
Tschagguns, Golmerbahn Middle Station in Latschau

Tips

Near the Lindauer Hütte, there is an alpine botanical garden covering about 3,000 m2 that features native plant species and plant communities from Vorarlberg. A visit to the garden can easily be combined with a stop at the Lindauer Hütte.
