Tour description

The Baukulturweg shows you how closely architecture, lifestyle, and the economy are intertwined in the Montafon region, while guiding you through the diverse landscape around Vandans.

Traditional Montafon houses, modern buildings, and historic structures along the trail tell the story of different eras and ways of life. The region’s architectural heritage is closely linked to agriculture, tourism, and the energy sector, illustrating how the use of natural resources has shaped the architecture and cultural landscape.

Along the loop, you’ll discover, among other things, the “Manga Hüsli,” the historic Montafon cabbage-slicing factory, and the Rodunder reservoirs. In between, forest trails, playgrounds, and the walking path along the Ill River offer a variety of sights and experiences.

What is the Montafon Alpine Mosaic?

The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon. Four exploration areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—illustrate how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are interconnected.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails continually offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

So: Choose an exploration area, lace up your hiking boots, and discover the diversity of the Montafon step by step.

You can find more information about the Montafon Alpine Mosaic HERE.

Directions
From the town center, with its old and new churches, the trail leads you out of the valley toward the Mustergielbach stream. After crossing the stream, follow the top of the dam to Valkastielstraße and continue to the Mustergielbach dam lock. There you’ll find the “Gemsle” forest playground.

The trail then continues along a small footpath back toward the town center, passing the playground near the kindergarten. Passing the “Manga Hüsli,” you’ll reach the crest of the Rellsbach dam and continue on to the Innerbach district. Passing the Montafon Cabbage Slicer Factory and the Golmerbahn valley station, the trail continues to the Rodunder reservoirs. Finally, you’ll hike along the Ill River back to the town center.
