The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon region. Four themed areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—illustrate how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are intertwined.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails continually offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

Starting Point
Silbertal, upper station of the Kristbergbahn

Directions
From the Kristbergbahn mountain station, hike along a wide trail into the valley, past the Siebenbrünnele Kneipp facility, to the Wildried high moor. From there, the trail descends to Lobsteg, where you’ll cross the Burtschabach stream. On the opposite side of the valley, the trail leads you uphill again toward Gretschalpe and Fellimännle.

From Gretschalpe, you’ll reach Gretschersee in about 30 minutes. Then continue hiking toward Gaflunaalpe. After another climb, you’ll reach the turnoff to Fellimännle. The detour to the summit follows the same path both ways.

Back at the junction, the descent begins toward the Obere Gaflunaalpe and continues to the Untere Gaflunaalpe. From there, you’ll hike a short distance further down the valley to the Silbertal hiking bus stop, which will take you back to the town center.

Getting to the Starting Point
The starting point for the tour is the Kristbergbahn mountain station in Silbertal. Please note the Kristbergbahn’s operating hours.

By public transportation:
The Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn provide convenient and flexible travel throughout the valley. The train and bus connect the towns regularly, either every half hour or every hour, depending on the route. You can find your connection HERE. By car:
Take the A14 to the Bludenz/Montafon exit, then follow the L188 into the Montafon valley. After crossing the railroad tracks, turn left at the next intersection and follow the road to the roundabout. From there, follow the signs into Silbertal to the Kristbergbahn. There is a paid parking lot across from the valley station.

For this mountain hike, we recommend sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with a grippy tread. Be sure to bring plenty of food and drinks. Hiking poles are recommended for the longer ascents and descents.

When planning your hike, be sure to check the schedule for the Silbertal Hiking Bus, as the hike does not end at the starting point. The Silbertal Hiking Bus runs from mid-June to mid-September on Tuesdays and Fridays from the Silbertal fire station to the Untere Gaflunaalpe. Advance registration is required by 5:00 p.m. the day before at the Silbertal Tourist Office at +43 50 6686 230. There is a fee for the hiking bus, and it is not included in the WildPass.

The Obere Gaflunaalpe is a great place to stop for a break along the way. There, you can sample the traditional Montafon Sura Kees, which is made in the alpine pastures during the summer months.
