Tour description

A scenic loop hike around the turquoise-blue Lünsersee, nestled in the imposing mountain landscape of the Rätikon and characterized by alpine nature, spectacular views, and a unique history.

Lake Lünersee lies at an elevation of 1,970 meters and is considered the turquoise-blue pearl of the Rätikon. It was once the largest natural mountain lake in the Eastern Alps; today, it is one of the largest reservoirs in western Austria. In 1959, its capacity was expanded by an imposing dam. The alpine pastures around the lake have always been used by farmers from the Montafon, even though Lake Lünersee lies at the end of the Brandnertal Valley and belongs to the municipality of Vandans.

In 2019, Lünersee was named Austria’s most beautiful place on the TV show “9 Places – 9 Treasures.” On a hike around the lake, you can explore the alpine flora in the nature reserve and, with a little luck, spot chamois, ibex, or marmots.

What is the Montafon Alpine Mosaic?

The Montafon Alpine Mosaic showcases the scenic diversity of the Montafon. Four themed areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—illustrate how geology, nature, and the cultural landscape are intertwined.

Along 34 themed trails, you can discover the unique features of these diverse landscapes. Starting points, themes, and stories along the trails continually offer you new perspectives on the Montafon.

So: Choose an exploration area, lace up your hiking boots, and discover the diversity of the Montafon step by step.

You can find more information about the Montafon Alpine Mosaic HERE.

Directions
From the Lünerseebahn mountain station, the trail leads you to the Douglass Hut. From there, turn right toward Schesaplana and hike along the shore of Lake Lünersee until you reach the Lünersee-Alpe.

From the Lünersee-Alpe, the trail continues to the observation deck and then back down to the dam. Crossing the dam brings you back to the Douglass Hut and the Lünerseebahn mountain station.

The loop around Lünersee takes about 2.5 hours and is therefore well-suited for families with children.

The Landbus Montafon and the Montafonerbahn offer a convenient and flexible way to get around the valley. Trains and buses run regularly between the towns, every half hour or every hour, depending on the route. You can find the right connection HERE. Bus stop for the start/end of this tour: Brand Lünerseebahn. From there, take the Lünerseebahn to the starting point of the hike.

By car:

Important Information

For the hike, we recommend wearing sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with a good grip. Be sure to bring a hiking backpack with plenty of food and drinks, as well as protection from the sun and rain. Hiking poles can provide extra support if needed.
