Montafoner Verwall round | Silbertal to New Heilbronner Hut
Tour description
An idyllic high-mountain hike through the Verwall European Nature Reserve, past crystal-clear mountain lakes and through the upper Silbertal valley to the Neue Heilbronner Hütte.
The Verwall European Nature Reserve, covering approximately 200 km2, is the largest protected area in Vorarlberg. This is where the Peripheral Alps and the Central Alps meet, a fact reflected in both the types of rock and the diverse habitats. Within a small area, you’ll find bogs, lakes, larch and Swiss stone pine forests, mountain pine, alder, and alpine rose thickets, colorful alpine meadows, and rugged rocky habitats.
The seclusion and tranquility of the Verwall provide valuable refuges for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species. On the trail to the Neue Heilbronner Hütte, you’ll experience this unique landscape with its clear mountain lakes and vast alpine habitats.

The Alpenmosaik Montafon brings the region’s scenic diversity to life. The four exploration areas—Verwall, Silvretta, Rätikon, and the valley—offer different perspectives on nature, landscape, and culture.

Directions
From the center of Silbertal, the trail leads you into the rear part of the Silbertal valley. Along the way, you’ll pass the Fellimännle Inn and reach the Untere Gaflunaalpe. Alternatively, you can take the hiking bus for this first section. From the Untere Gaflunaalpe, the trail continues into the upper Silbertal valley. Passing through the Obere Freschalpe, you’ll reach Langsee. After a break by the lake, continue hiking into the Schönverwall and follow the trail uphill to the Verbellner Winterjöchli. Above the Scheidseen, you’ll finally reach the Neue Heilbronner Hütte.

The starting point for the tour is downtown Silbertal.
By public transportation:
The Montafon regional bus and the Montafonerbahn offer a convenient and flexible way to get around the valley. Trains and buses run regularly between the towns, either every half hour or every hour, depending on the route. You can find the right connection HERE. By car:
Take the A14 to the Bludenz/Montafon exit, then follow the L188 into the Montafon valley as far as Schruns. From Schruns, you’ll reach Silbertal. Paid parking is available at the Kristbergbahn valley station.
Important Information
The entire tour is challenging and requires a high level of physical fitness. For the hike, we recommend sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with good traction, plenty of food and drinking water, and weather-appropriate clothing. Hiking poles can help you during the longer ascents and descents.
Tips
For the first section, we recommend taking the “Hinteres Silbertal” hiking bus. This shortens the hike by about 8 kilometers, or 2.5 hours. You can find information and make reservations HERE.
