At the end of the valley, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, lies a little world of its own. Those who come to Gargellen don’t do so by chance—they make a conscious choice to do so. It is a place of unspoiled beauty, where time seems to pass noticeably more slowly and nature sets the pace. But what is the essence of this special corner of the world? We asked around the village and spoke with people who shape Gargellen and hold it dear to their hearts. A journey of discovery amid deep fir green, glistening white, and a vibrant sense of community.
The Perfect Day in the Mountain Village of Gargellen
What does the absolutely perfect day in Gargellen look like? If you ask the locals and hosts, the experience begins, above all, with plenty of time and no rigid plans. For Amélie, a summer day ideally starts with a delicious breakfast on the Heimspitz terrace , followed by a hike into the picturesque Valzifenztal valley, always following the babbling stream. The “Gargellner Fensterweg,” created by the village community, is also considered an absolute highlight. For a cozy stop, there’s no getting around Steffi at the Rongg Alpe or Daniel at the Vergaldner Alpe.

A Unique Sense of Community
The unique geography at the end of the valley shields the village from the hustle and bustle of the world. Doris from the Hotel Bradabella describes Gargellen as a “little corner of the world where all the turmoil and hustle and bustle of this world haven’t reached yet.” This sheltered location also brings the village community close together. It’s a genuine sense of community where everyone knows and appreciates one another.
Here, many hardworking people are quietly going about their business. Manuela emphasizes that, despite the small community, some people are particularly passionate about village life. According to the residents, what’s typical of Gargellen is the unconditional solidarity in times of crisis.
“Everyone is an individual in their own right—but our strength lies in our community. When there’s a fire—figuratively speaking—everyone runs in the right direction.”– Doris Netzer
In winter, on the other hand, the village transforms into a true “winter wonderland,” as Amina from the village store so aptly describes it. Whether it’s a long ski tour up the Schafberg, the Madrisa loop, or a traditional dinner at the historic Hotel Madrisa—the combination of alpine activities and genuine enjoyment defines every season.
When Nature Awakens
The magic of Gargellen can’t be confined to a single month, but every season has its own deep charm. For Amélie, May is the most beautiful time of year:“I love this time of year, when nature awakens after winter and the contrast between the green valley and the white peaks becomes palpable. Shortly after that, the village takes on a magic all its own in early summer.”
“For me, Gargellen is at its most beautiful in June—even before the summer season begins. The blooming alpine roses, the colorful meadows, and the palpable power of nature make this time special. Add to that the tranquility: these days, our village belongs almost entirely to us.”—Manuela Ganahl
Others love fall, when the air becomes crystal clear and the mountains seem right nearby. And just before the New Year, the village takes on a truly spiritual magic, as Margit describes:“The Midnight Mass on December 24, held outdoors with a view of the illuminated church against a wintry backdrop—the magic of Christmas doesn’t get any deeper than that.”
Places of Absolute Silence
Anyone who comes to Gargellen seeks out—and finds—places of healing. These might include the lovingly tended “Heimspitz-GROWerei,” the gentle murmur of the water, or the Röbimaisäß near the stable. For Manuela, the Vergaldatal Valley, with its quiet beauty, and the Alpe Rongg in particular offer a refuge from an ever-accelerating world: there, you can feel a primal sense of peace, completely free of modern technology and close to what truly matters, where warmth and genuine hospitality take center stage.
The perfect way to end such a day is to simply learn to listen to nature.
“The perfect day starts early. Not because you have to, but because otherwise you might miss something. The first big snowfall… The snow doesn’t speak loudly—you have to learn to listen to it.”– Christian Thöny

- Your insider tip for guests: You rarely find the most beautiful spots in Gargellen on a map. My tip: just take a path you hadn’t actually planned to take. Often, right around the next bend, you’ll find exactly what you’ll remember the longest later on.
The most important insider tip the people of Gargellen have for their guests is therefore incredibly simple: “Take the time to sit down on a bench and just look around. In Gargellen, you don’t have to be constantly doing something—often the most beautiful moments are the quiet ones. Just leave your cell phone in your pocket for once,” is the unanimous credo. Arrive, take a deep breath, and soak up the spirit of the place.
