The local Alpine agriculture is of great significance to the lifestyle, economy and culture of the Montafon.
In Vorarlberg, about 55 per cent of the area used for agriculture is used exclusively for Alpine agriculture. For two thirds of all farming families in the country, Alpine agriculture is the primary source of their financial existence. Unique in all of Europe is the high proportion of Alpine pastures used for cows, especially the Alpine dairies, where the fresh mountain air, lush green grass and especially the Alpine herbs form the feed basis for fresh Alpine milk as well as butter and cheese.
The Montafon has very large Alpine pasture areas. There are currently 12 Alpine dairies located at a height between 1,100 and 1,800 metres above sea level. There the dairy farmers produce Montafon Sura Kees during the summer from silo-free raw milk. From this cream, the golden yellow full cream butter as well as individual hard and mountain cheeses are produced. The Alpine pigs are fed the resulting curd.
